Gordon Ryan vs. Yuri Simões Headlines ‘KASAI Pro’
2017 ADCC champions to meet in main event openweight superfight
October 25, 2017 – New York City, NY – KASAI Elite Grappling Championships (KASAI) has secured a scintillating main-event matchup for its upcoming event ‘KASAI Pro’, pitting two decorated ADCC winners against one-another as 88kg (194lbs) champion and heel hook savant Gordon Ryan, meets 99kg (218lbs) champion and armbar specialist Yuri Simões.
The duo will compete in an openweight, ten-minute match with no points and all submissions legal on. After ten minutes, the contest will enter a six-minute overtime period with points enabled. If no clear victor emerges after overtime, the bout will go to judges’ decision. There will be no advantages awarded. KASAI Pro takes place December 9 at the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York, with the event also broadcast on FloGrappling.
“In Gordon and Yuri we have two beasts at the top of their respective food chains who will compete for alpha status under the bright lights of New York City,” said Rolles Gracie, KASAI President. “KASAI’s first professional event sends a bold statement about our plans to showcase the world’s finest talent while elevating the sport of Jiu-Jitsu as a whole. We’re very excited.”
Gordon Ryan, 23, is a 2016 IBJJF World No-Gi champion with a lethal 85 percent finish rate in victory. He completed a remarkable four-year rise to the top of the game under the tutelage of coaches John Danaher and Tom DeBlass as a Renzo Gracie Association and Brunswick BJJ student by becoming the first American to secure gold in the 88kg weight class at last month’s ADCC tournament. He also earned a second-place finish in the competition’s absolute division.
Yuri Simões, 27, considered among the greatest grapplers of his generation, boasts black belt World Championships under the IBJJF (2014, 2016, 88kg and absolute) and ADCC (2015, 2017) banners. Originally a student of Ricardo Vieira at the Checkmat Jiu-Jitsu academy, he is now a member of the Caio Terra BJJ Association.
Ryan is joined on the card by his mentor, Garry Tonon, who competes in KASAI’s eight-man World Lightweight Championship tournament the same night. Also confirmed for the tournament are Mansher Khera and Edwin “Junny” Ocasio, who won a 16-man qualifying tournament at The Elite Grappling Championships on October 21 to earn a place in the tournament.
