‘KASAI Pro 2’ Hosts Geo Martinez vs. Nicky Ryan
The online feud becomes grappling reality on April 14 in Brooklyn, New York.
March 15, 2018 – New York City, NY – KASAI Elite Grappling Championships (KASAI) adds a second superfight to ‘KASAI Pro 2’ as California’s Geo Martinez faces New York’s Nicky Ryan in a battle of East Coast versus West Coast.
The duo will square off in a submission-only bout at 140lbs. Judges’ decision will determine the victor if there is no clear outcome in regular time.
“We’re thrilled to present this intriguing matchup that the Jiu-Jitsu community has been clamoring for,” said Rolles Gracie, KASAI President. “We first saw Geo and Nicky’s rivalry ignite on December 8, the day before our first ‘KASAI Pro’ event. It’s only fitting that the duo settle their score on our return to Brooklyn for ‘KASAI Pro 2’.”
Martinez, 31, is a two-time ADCC combatant and a three-time EBI champion, having won tournaments at both 145lbs and 135lbs. An accomplished no-gi black belt under famed instructor Eddie Bravo of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, ‘Freakazoid’ has won 77 percent of his competitive wins by way of submission, developing a reputation for his calf-slicer submission.
Ryan, who won FloGrappling’s 2017 ‘Juvenile of the Year’ award, steps onto KASAI’s mat at just 16 years old. A purple belt under iconic instructor John Danaher at Renzo Gracie Academy, he holds victories over numerous black belts. He also holds the record for being the youngest ADCC competitor in history, having competed at 66kg in last year’s event.
“I’m very excited for my upcoming match with Geo Martinez at KASAI Pro 2,” said Ryan. “This is by far the biggest match of my career and I look forward to showcasing my skills at such an amazing event.”
‘KASAI Pro 2’ is shaping up as one of the strongest Jiu-Jitsu’s events of 2018. The main card will feature an epic clash between two-time EBI champion Eddie Cummings and KASAI’s World Lightweight Champion Renato Canuto. In addition, eight of the greatest grapplers at 185lbs will compete in a round-robin tournament to crown the inaugural KASAI World Middleweight Champion. Names confirmed include Craig Jones, DJ Jackson, Richie ‘Boogeyman’ Martinez, Matheus Diniz, Dante Leon and Nick Calvanese, the latter of whom won KASAI’s middleweight qualifier on March 3.
‘KASAI Pro 2’ takes place April 14 at the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York. Tickets for ‘KASAI Pro 2’ are now on-sale at kasaigrappling.ticketleap.com/kasai-pro-2. The event will also broadcast on FloGrappling. For more information, please visit www.kasaigrappling.com.
