Qualifier Adds Fuel to KASAI’s Debut Jiu-Jitsu Event
No gi tournament at The Elite Grappling Championships offers unique opportunity for one talented grappler to go pro.
September 5, 2017 – New York City, NY – KASAI has added a single no gi 155lb-division to its inaugural amateur event, The Elite Grappling Championships, which will guarantee the winner a spot in the organization’s upcoming professional Jiu-Jitsu tournament. Qualifiers will be contested as six-minute matches, with all submissions legal and the IBJJF points system in place.
Taking place Saturday, October 21, at Baruch College in midtown Manhattan, The Elite Grappling Championships will feature amateur gi Jiu-Jitsu tournament tracks contested under IBJJF rules. Brackets will be open to male and female competitors across different weight classes and skill levels; white belt through black belt.
“History has shown time and again that fans of martial arts and combat sports appreciate a compelling story,” said Rich Byrne, KASAI President. “To put something up for grabs as valuable as a ticket to Jiu-Jitsu’s professional ranks gives grappling fans another reason to attend this event, while adding a new dimension for our upcoming professional show.”
KASAI’s first professional event will feature an eight-man no gi tournament to decide the organization’s inaugural world champion at 155lbs. Top performers from the world of Jiu-Jitsu will compete in multiple six-minute bouts across two round-robin brackets. All submissions are legal and the IBJJF points system will be in place to decide who advances. Victories by submission will receive more credit and the winners of each bracket will meet in the finals. A date, venue and additional match ups for the card will be announced in due course.
“Growth and achievement are two of Jiu-Jitsu’s finest qualities,” said Rolles Gracie, KASAI President. “To reward one talented competitor with a chance to turn their passion into a career complements our mission to showcase Jiu-Jitsu’s next wave of East Coast talent.”
Interested parties can sign up for the tournament via KASAI’s website, www.kasaigrappling.com or Smooth Comp. Tournament registration is open to all parties aged 18 and above. For more information, visit www.kasaigrappling.com/egc.
